Ancient marionette on festival float.
The annual Spring festival at Hida Takayama in the highlands of central Japan features processions of large wheeled floats dating from the 16th century.
These floats are sumptuously decorated with intricate carvings, rich tapestries, and lacquer finishes. Many feature marionettes such as the one shown here that are controlled from inside the float via complex arrangements of cables and levers.
